The Lānaʻi Guide
One town, two resorts, no traffic lights. A small island where the whole visitor economy fits on a few streets.
Lānaʻi is about 140 square miles with roughly three thousand residents, almost all of them in Lānaʻi City — a plantation town laid out around a square of Cook pines at 1,600 feet, where it is genuinely cool in the evenings. There are no traffic lights on the island. Most of the roads are unpaved, and the ones worth driving need four-wheel drive, which is why a Jeep is the standard rental and why it costs what it costs.
Two ways in. The Expeditions ferry runs from Lahaina Harbor on Maui in about 45 minutes and is by far the cheaper option, though the channel gets rough in winter afternoons. Or fly into Lānaʻi Airport, usually via Honolulu. Day-tripping is possible on the ferry, and if that is your plan, spend it at Hulopoʻe Bay — a marine preserve with the best easy snorkeling on the island, spinner dolphins most mornings, and a beach park you can walk to from the harbor. Sweetheart Rock is the short hike above it.
Set expectations honestly on cost and scale. Two Four Seasons properties anchor the island — one at Mānele Bay, one upcountry — and they set the price of a lot of what is here. But Lānaʻi City has genuine local businesses at normal prices, which is most of what is listed below. Keahiakawelo, the so-called Garden of the Gods, is a rock-strewn plateau best at low sun and reachable only on dirt. The island shuts down early. Plan meals rather than wander into them.
