Kapahulu & Monsarrat: The Honest Guide

Kapahulu Avenue starts at the Ala Wai Canal at the edge of Waikīkī and runs inland toward Kaimukī. Monsarrat Avenue splits off toward Diamond Head. Together they are the answer to the most common question a Waikīkī visitor has on night two: where do I eat something that is not a hotel restaurant, without renting a car. From most Waikīkī hotels, the near end of Kapahulu is a ten to fifteen minute walk.

Set your expectations correctly: this is a commercial strip, not a scenic destination. Kapahulu is a two-lane avenue with power lines, small storefronts, and cars looking for parking. Nobody comes here for the view. They come because within about a mile you can eat a malasada still warm from the fryer at Leonard's Bakery, a plate lunch at Rainbow Drive-In that has been served the same way since 1961, poke by the pound at a counter, and shave ice with real syrup — and because none of it is priced for a resort.

Monsarrat, running toward Diamond Head, is the quieter and slightly more polished half. It has the coffee shops and brunch places, and it is the natural route to and from a Diamond Head hike — the crater trailhead sits at the far end of it. A common and genuinely good plan is to walk or catch a ride up Monsarrat early, hike Diamond Head at sunrise, and eat on the way back down when everything has opened.

Practical notes. Parking is the weak point — most places have a handful of stalls or none, street parking is metered and enforced, and this is a real reason to walk from Waikīkī rather than drive. Many of the best spots are counter service that closes early evening, not dinner restaurants, so plan the strip for breakfast, lunch or an early dinner rather than a late one. And Leonard's has a line most of the day; it moves faster than it looks.
