The Big Island · Island Guide
The Hawaiʻi Island Guide
Kona to Hilo, sea level to 13,000 feet. Where to eat, what to book, and how to plan for an island bigger than all the others combined.
The nickname is doing real work here. Hawaiʻi Island is larger than every other Hawaiian island put together, and visitors consistently underplan for that. Kona to Hilo is about two and a half hours across the saddle, and the two sides are different climates, not just different towns — Kona is dry, sunny, and resort-heavy on the Kohala Coast; Hilo is green, rainy, and a working town with the best farmers market in the state. If you have fewer than five days, base on one side and accept you will not see the other properly. If you have more, split your stay. Driving the width of the island twice in one day is the most common way people waste a vacation here.
Volcanoes National Park is the reason most people come, and it rewards an evening rather than an afternoon. Whether there is active lava at Kīlauea depends entirely on what the volcano is doing that week — check the USGS status before you build a day around it, and never trust a tour listing photo as evidence of current activity. Bring a jacket: the crater rim sits around 4,000 feet and it is cold and often wet after dark. Mauna Kea is colder still. The visitor station at 9,200 feet is open to anyone and has excellent stargazing; the summit road above it needs four-wheel drive, acclimatization, and is genuinely dangerous to treat casually.
This is also the food island. Kona coffee is the only commercially grown coffee in the United States that carries a real appellation, and the farms above Kailua-Kona will show you the whole process for the price of a bag. Waimea is paniolo country with the ranch beef to match. Hilo has the island's best local eating, and the Merriman's farm-to-table movement started here in the eighties, not in California.
Below: the restaurants, cafés and coffee farms, tour operators, and shops we have researched across both sides of the island, best-rated first, each with an address and hours. Any card can pass the question to Nani.
