Honolulu nightlife
The aloha.fyi nightlife directory holds eleven rooms tagged Kakaʻako or SALT at Our Kakaʻako, and four of the eleven are typed as breweries. One line of orientation, which is ours and not the directory's: Kakaʻako and Ward Village sit between downtown Honolulu and Ala Moana. Everything after this sentence comes off the rows.
All eleven carry a write-up, and a write-up here is the directory's listing text, not a visit from us. Two names you might look for are missing on purpose. Kona Brewing has no Kakaʻako or Ward room: its Oʻahu pub is in Hawaiʻi Kai. And Nori Bar Ward, on Auahi St, is a hand roll sushi bar that pours, which makes it a restaurant with a bar rather than a bar, so it sits with the restaurants.
The counts below that describe a night out — which rooms program Saturday, what the door costs, which say where to park — are taken over all eleven, and ten is usually the ceiling: Pitch Sports Bar's write-up gives its hours, its screens and its sushi counter, and gives no cover figure and nothing about age, parking or which nights it programs. And these are the rooms this directory has tagged for this neighborhood, which is not the same as every bar in it. Four rows are typed as breweries, and all four carry a write-up: Aloha Beer Company, whose listing counts thirteen styles on tap in a dog-friendly beer garden with Friday night live music; Hana Koa Brewing Co., which its listing calls a full-production brewery with two full bars and a full kitchen; Howzit Brewing, dog-friendly by its listing and open seven days a week from noon; and the Kakaʻako taproom of Waikiki Brewing Company, which its listing calls Oahu's first and only Waikiki-based craft brewery. Two more rooms are beer-first without brewing: Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room at SALT, which its listing calls Hawaii's first dedicated craft beer bottle shop and beer café, and Off The Wall Craft Beer & Wine, a craft beer and wine tap house with Latin American-inspired food. Aloha Beer, Hana Koa and Howzit each list an all-ages room with a 21+ bar, so the room and the bar have different rules. The listings do not say what hour that stops being true, and a door policy is the sort of thing a room changes without telling us.
Three listings publish a happy-hour window. Aloha Beer Company's says daily, 2–6 PM. Bevy's says Tuesday to Saturday, 5–7 PM. The Waikiki Brewing taproom's says daily, 3–6 PM. Read every figure in this paragraph as what the listing recorded when we read it rather than as tonight's schedule.
Bevy carries five genre tags — house, electronic, jazz, live music and DJ sets — the widest spread of any room in the set, and its listing names Soulgasm's house music nights and touring international DJs. The Gatsby Hawaii is the lounge end of the same idea: live music, craft cocktails and cigars, 21+ at the door. Artistry Honolulu is the only room tagged EDM, drum and bass and bass music, and its listed cover of $20–$40 is the only one in the set that does not start at none or free. The Gatsby and The Row Kaka'ako, a sports bar its listing puts in the Kakaako waterfront area, are both listed open until 2 AM, and so is the other sports bar, Pitch Sports Bar, on the second floor at SALT — on Friday and Saturday, with midnight the rest of the week. Artistry Honolulu's recorded hours run latest of all, to 4 AM. Read any cover or closing time here as the shape of the thing, not a promise about tonight.
Live music is the most-tagged genre in the set — six rooms carry it, which is why several of them also turn up on our Honolulu live music page — and live music means a calendar. Saturday is listed as a good night by ten of the eleven rooms, and Friday by the same ten; Pitch Sports Bar's listing names no such night. Thursday appears exactly twice: Bevy, and Hana Koa's Moon Room, the brewery's dedicated event and live music space, which its listing puts at Thursday through Saturday from 4:30 PM. No row lists a good night earlier than Thursday. What Monday to Wednesday gets instead is standing hours rather than programming: daily happy hours at Aloha Beer Company and the Waikiki Brewing taproom, Bevy's window from Tuesday, Howzit Brewing open seven days a week from noon, The Row Kaka'ako listed open until 2 AM daily, and Pitch Sports Bar until midnight. A live-music calendar moves week to week, so the room's own page is the only current one, and dated shows land on the Hawaiʻi events calendar.
Nine of the eleven rooms say something about parking; six of the nine mention street parking, and four name the street — Kamani, Auahi, Queen and Ala Moana Blvd. Those are streets to park on, which is not the same as the street the door is on; ten of the eleven rows carry a street address for that. Three rows carry SALT at Our Kakaʻako. Bevy and Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room both name the SALT parking structure, the only parking value two of these listings share, and Pitch Sports Bar, the eleventh, has no address line: its write-up puts the door at 685 Auahi St, on the second floor, and says nothing about where to leave the car. The Ward end is thinner than the name on the map suggests. No room on this page is filed under Ward, and the only listing that names that end is Off The Wall Craft Beer & Wine, which it places in the Ward Village area of Kakaako, with parking pointed at Auahi St and the Ward Village area lots.
